5 Ways to Make the first 100 Days Count

Uncategorized Nov 03, 2020

With the General Election in the U.S. this week, minds are inevitably drawn to the first 100 days in office, whether new or returning. The benchmark was first set by President Franklyn D. Roosevelt back in the 1930’s and his productivity and action has never been matched since.

The first 100-Days has since become synonymous with indicating the overall success and efficacy of one President over another.

As solo business owners the first 100-day concept also applies to us. We only have a certain bandwidth and so our strategies and focus become even more important as we aim to invest time where it can have the most impact.

After the initial 100 days of focus (or good intentions), other things inevitably distract and draw us away from the original plan and strategy making the wins more challenging to achieve. The rest of the time is often spent playing catch up or just trying to get through the massive to do list. The message is clear. Get things done and get them done fast before life takes over.

While it's usually different goals, 92% of people don't follow through on their New Year's resolutions.

Let's make 2021 different.

Looking ahead

While the 90-day per quarter plan is highly useful for general business planning, the 100-day plan works on a different level. It is the one which literally sets the tone for the whole year.

Ace it and watch your year go to a whole new level. Ignore it, and your year may just feel like Groundhog Day ie. the same thing over, and over, and over again with little forward momentum.

Performance in the first 100 days is crucial and your business and clients will thank you for it.

But what does that look like?

1. Be visible & build relationships

Whether it is on social media, your email list, virtual chats, online events or networking, stay visible and stay connected. Know your message and deliver it consistently and authentically to your target audience. Aside from that, simply listen to people and get to know them.

Tip: If you don’t know who your target audience is or what your message is I can highly recommend an excellent programme for this. Email me at [email protected] for more info.

 2. Have a plan, work the plan

How can you get where you’re going if you don’t have a plan to get there or where ‘there’ is?

Everyone is so busy these days that taking a time out to think seems like something impossible or crazy to do. It’s as crazy as we make it in my opinion. My business, its performance and my life transformed when I stopped to think and figure out what was next, and how I was going to get there.

3. Be productive & secure quick wins

Gain confidence and momentum quickly by making small things happen. What can you do in the next hour which will get you one step closer? Block everything else out and get some quick wins.

4. Be optimistic

Yes, we are living through a Pandemic.

Yes, our lives have been turned upside down with all the change.

Yes, we can still be optimistic.

Being optimistic comes down to pure grit and perspective.

Focus on the do-ables and the opportunity. Push uncertainty away.

If you haven’t already, tell yourself that whatever happens, ups or downs, you will find a way forward and you will be successful. Full-stop. And believe it. You’ve got this.

5. Get feedback

Last but not least, the first 100 days will be an even greater success if you adapt and iterate along the way. Ask for outside opinions from people who will look at things differently than you or from your clients themselves. You are looking for blind spots and quick wins, not just ‘feedback’. Things you can change simply and do differently for better results for your clients. As a coach or consultant, if you can deliver more value to the right people at the right time, then you are on to a winner.

As President of your own business, what will your first 100 days look like in 2021?

Are you eager to get going with a roaring start or quietly slip into 2021 and watch the months go by?

As small business owners we each have a choice and I’d love to see as many businesses as possible embrace a roaring start next year. Just imagine what that could lead to!

Build your future today. Your future self will thank you.
