10 things this past year has taught me

Mar 03, 2021

"You are a goal and accountability coach."

If you told me this a year ago, I would have said you were mad.

Wow. This day last year I was a live event manager.

How times change.

Like me, you have your own Covid story and, like me, you are probably thinking that it was this week last year that everything changed.

My gamechanger came on March 4 when I got the first phone call that my event, due to take place in 4 weeks and we had worked on it for many months, was being pushed out. So began the great exodus. The entire live event industry quickly felt the effects and all live events, be it conferences, seminars, tradeshows, festivals, concerts and any others you can think of, were cancelled and have not returned since.

I could go down that rabbit-hole, but for the purposes of this email, I'm not going to.

Instead I am going to share the 10 valuable lessons that this year has highlighted for me and my business.

  1. No one will give you permission to be successful. You have to...

No way, it's not March already! Here's the plan

Feb 26, 2021

It's the last Friday in February. Can't quite believe it myself and yet, here we are nearly 2 months into 2021.

Lockdowns, home schooling and trying to stay sane have been constant companions, but let's take a time out for ourselves to consider our businesses.

I wrote this email as I wait to start this mornings FastTrack Club and it always makes me think about the week gone by and, today, we are taking time to think about what we want to achieve in March before Quarter 1 ends.

Have New Years Resolutions fallen by the wayside?
Have you lost the will to push on the business front?
Or indeed, have you come up with a new zeal for the business because of a new idea or support?

Whatever your experience has been I encourage you to take a moment, here and now. 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes - it could really help you. You and your business are valuable and you need time to stop and reflect to make the most of the time to come. Working on your business is the only way...

Your business should not make you ill

Feb 03, 2021

This past week I had no less than 4 people tell me that they were feeling stress symptoms and were physically ill because of something that was going on with their businesses and the impact on life, or vice versa.

Our business, our job, should not make us ill. It's not ok and, if you are there right now, I am so sorry to hear it. It totally and utterly sucks. Let's just call it out.

I'm no doctor, but if you are feeling sick to your stomach over something, experiencing brain fog, over-eating, not sleeping, can't make yourself do something or generally feel like you are weighed down, something has to give and, if it's you, it won't be pretty.

As someone who has broken out in hives triggered by stress, my advice is that recovery starts with a decision and only you can make it. Remember the amazing guts and gumption that you are made of and say no to feeling like crap. Say yes to feeling positive, energetic and inspired.

Whatever is at the root of it,...

Is it time to just stop?

Jan 21, 2021

You may be familiar with this headspace ...

There is always so much to do (what you 'should' do) and so little time. Something for the business, for a client, for a child, for the family and less likely something for yourself. Something that will keep the train on the rails and everything will be ok. 'I just need to survive until...' or 'when this is done I will...' or 'when I think/feel/do/know then I will make sure that I do this for me or for the business'. And you feel more tired, unmotivated and distracted with each passing week. I just need to keep juggling and everything will be ok.

Here is it the advice that I wish someone had told me years before I copped it for myself. Let it fall apart.

Imagine this Gemma.

You just stop.

Stop being the superglue.

Stop being so focused on getting things done that you are not thinking about what you are actually doing or the results that you will get.

Stop for a minute, an hour, a day, a week or...

5 Questions to check if you have healthy boundaries

Nov 27, 2020

I used to be useless at boundaries. Totally useless (eyeroll). I was always stressed, always exhausted and eventually my body gave out. Since then I've had to learn something that I didn't event know I didn't know.

I remember what it felt like to first say no to a thought, to an idea. Previously I would have gone down the rabbit hole all while thinking that I was on the right track and doing something I needed to do. I was just threading water rather than living and I didn't even realise.

Turns out a lot of what I was doing in a day was actually not contributing to what I really wanted and needed in my life. Go figure!

So have a think about these questions:

  1. - Do you say yes to everything or everyone?
  2. - Do you question the need for each action or do you prioritise?
  3. - Do you often find yourself stressed and overwhelmed around your commitments?
  4. - Do you ever say 'no' or re-negotiate a request to better work for you?
  5. - Do you ever question other peoples definition of...
